Follow the road from the foot of Mount Ararat into Armenia’s wine country, where ancient monasteries, hidden caves and centuries-old winemaking traditions meet.

The first stop is Khor Virap Monastery, one of Armenia’s most famous religious landmarks. Located in the Ararat Valley, the monastery is closely associated with Saint Gregory the Illuminator, who was imprisoned here before helping Armenia adopt Christianity as its state religion in the early 4th century. On clear days, enjoy magnificent views of Mount Ararat rising behind the monastery.

Continue south through the landscapes of Vayots Dzor, one of Armenia’s most scenic regions and the heart of its ancient winemaking culture. At a local Areni winery, discover the flavors of Armenian wine and learn about traditions that have been passed down through generations. Depending on your chosen itinerary, you can also visit Areni-1 Cave, an archaeological site where some of the world’s oldest evidence of winemaking was discovered.

Bird’s Cave (Areni-1 Cave) — Optional

For those interested in archaeology and ancient history, a visit to Bird’s Cave, also known as Areni-1 Cave, offers a fascinating look into Armenia’s distant past. Archaeological excavations revealed evidence of ancient human activity, including a remarkably early winemaking facility. The discoveries made here provide valuable insight into the region’s long-standing connection with wine production

The journey then takes you deeper into the dramatic Gorge, where Noravank Monastery appears between towering red cliffs. Built from warm-colored stone and surrounded by striking rock formations, Noravank is one of Armenia’s most photogenic medieval monasteries.

This route is a meeting point of faith, archaeology, wine and extraordinary landscapes — from the legendary view of Mount Ararat to the vineyards of Areni and the red cliffs surrounding Noravank.

This private tour offers a combination of Armenian history, religious heritage, local wine culture, and remarkable scenery. You can tailor the experience by choosing a winery visit, an exploration of Bird’s Cave, or both, depending on your interests and the time available. After visiting the region’s highlights, return to Yerevan with a deeper appreciation of Armenia’s cultural and historical heritage.
