This day combines some of northern Armenia’s best-known natural and historical sites with a visit to one of the country’s established wine and brandy producers.

The first stop is Lake Sevan, Armenia’s largest lake and one of the highest large freshwater lakes in the world. Surrounded by mountain ranges, the lake changes character with the weather and light, from deep blue waters under a clear sky to dramatic shades of grey when clouds gather over the mountains. Its high-altitude setting makes Sevan feel distinctly different from the warmer landscapes around Yerevan.

Above the lake stands Sevanavank Monastery, built from the dark volcanic stone typical of the region. The monastery occupies the Sevan Peninsula, offering wide views across the lake and toward the surrounding mountains. The combination of the rugged stone churches and the vast expanse of water makes this one of the most recognizable landscapes in Armenia.

From Sevan, continue to Dilijan, a green mountain town surrounded by dense forests. During the walking tour, explore the oldest street of Dilijan, where traditional stone and wooden architecture gives an idea of how the town looked in earlier times. The slower pace here offers a chance to see a different side of Armenia — one shaped by forest landscapes, crafts, historic houses and mountain life.

The route then continues to Haghartsin Monastery or Goshavank Monastery, depending on the selected itinerary. Haghartsin Monastery is tucked deep within the forested mountains of Dilijan. The medieval complex includes several churches and other historic structures, with stone architecture that blends naturally into its wooded surroundings. Reaching Haghartsin feels almost like entering a secluded corner of medieval Armenia, far from the towns and main roads.

Alternatively, visit Goshavank Monastery, another important medieval religious and educational centre. Founded by the scholar and church leader Mkhitar Gosh, the monastery became associated with learning, manuscript production and intellectual life. Its detailed stonework and khachkars make it particularly interesting for those who want to see the artistic side of Armenia’s medieval heritage.

The final stop takes you to Ijevan Wine-Brandy Factory, established in 1951 and one of Armenia’s long-established producers of wine and brandy. The factory works with grapes and fruits to produce brandy, grape wines, fruit wines and fruit vodkas, along with other products. A visit to the factory brings a different dimension to the tour: instead of simply seeing Armenia’s landscapes and monuments, you also get to explore a part of the country’s modern production tradition.

It is a fitting way to finish a day that moves from the natural waters of Sevan, through forested mountain towns and medieval monasteries, to Armenia’s continuing tradition of working with grapes and fruit.
